2023 Coaltown Throwdown

The second annual Coaltown Throwdown happened June 3 in Cumberland, BC. Although technically a race, this women’s mountain bike enduro is definitely more about getting ladies out on their bikes and having a good time. Costumes are encouraged, fun stations are throughout the course, and riders of all ages and abilities are welcomed with open arms. This year I was happy to jump on board as a sponsor and spent the day capturing the action on and off the trails.

After experiencing a complete downpour on year one, year two race weather was perfect. Spirits were high and costumes were flaunted during registration. Over 130 women participated in three different categories: Cruiser, Giver, and Full Send. There was also a youth category for the young female shredders.

Participants were lead through some race information, and then a warmup and stretch in Village Park before taking off in their respective categories.

The youth were first to come through riding old Vanilla top to bottom. The future is looking bright!

I spent some time on Vanilla as it was the only trail that all of the categories rode through. A Cumberland classic trail, the vibes were flowing and everyone was having fun.

A huge shoutout to all of the volunteers and sponsors who made the day possible! Fun stations pit stops with games, prizes and delicious trail snacks made for a fun event for riders. A particularly rowdy crew between Scat and Brat provided the full Canadian bike race experience for riders passing through, chainsaw and all.

Post-race apres started in the park and included the youth podium presentation. After a short break, the group moved up to the CRI for an amazing dinner, adult podiums, draw prizes and Coaltown Throwdown’s legendary after party.

All in all, this event was a huge success and I was so stoked to be a part of it and to be supporting female mountain biking in my hometown. Thanks again for everyone who worked so hard to make this event happen - so many hours were put in behind the scenes. I’m already looking forward to next year!
